... And Then There's ...

Most of our bunnies don't have something terribly wrong with them, but have had terrible wrong done to them. The list begins ...

... and then there's Pearl.
She was simply dropped in a park. Her owners cleared their conscience by saying something like, "There's plenty of grass - she'll do alright."

... and then there's Holiday.
Not only was she simply dropped off with the line, "We just don't have time for her anymore ..." but she was adopted (on a Friday) by a woman that wanted to replace her lost dog with a caring bunny.

"None better than Holiday for a situation like that", we said. The lady brought her back the following Monday morning saying, "She's sweet ... but she's just not a dog."

... and then there's Royce.
He was simply left to die (no other explanation will do) in the garage of an empty house (family moved). Were it not for the sister having to go by to check something little Royce would have certainly died.

... and then there's Diamond.
She and her five kits were simply left in a box on a street corner. They were almost euthanized, but we got them in time.

... and then there's Champagne.
She and Scooter were simply left in the unfenced back yard when the family moved. We managed to capture them and, only a few days later, Champagne blessed us with eight kits!  It was an unkept neighborhood and we're sure the kits would not have survived the feral cats and dogs.

... and then there's Sheena.
She was also left behind - but in a fenced backyard. Luckily the neighbors saw her and fed her potatos and carrots for almost two months before someone broke down and brought her to us.

... and then there's ... Well, the point is that every bunny we see has a not-so-good story to tell. The sorrow of those stories is that they all begin with the word ABANDONED - for whatever reason.

Join us as we pray for all the animals that will not make it to a shelter.

... The Bunny Boom ...

When it rains, it pours ...

First was Char. She was simply dropped on the street - obviously because she was pregnant. We got her the first of March and she delivered nine kits on the eighth. She and her kits are doing fine. Daddy must have been a Rex.

Then Chloee joined in. We got Chloee in a divorce scenario and she came to us with Buddy. We were assured over and over about how careful they were to never have allowed them to get together.

Well, as with so many before and surely yet to come, it was just another conscience-clearing story. At least we have to believe so since there will only be one immaculate conception.

Chloee gave us six beautiful kits - all Dalmation.

Now Lillie is nesting, the two Palomino girls Janelle and Janette came in with a buck (not in any way separated), Sunflower and Iris came in from a breeder - which is always a toss-up.

Long story short ... We have a possibility of gaining 35 to 43 or more bunnies without a rescue. That's around 40 or more cage slots taken that should have been used for abandoned, abused, or dumped bunnies due to irresponsible ownership.

We still won't turn any away, but every time we expand, we wonder why we don't just buy an old supermarket building or something.

Thank you for your support, both spiritual and financial.

PETsMART .. 2 !!

We're doing adoptions at two locations now!

The PETsMART store in the mini-mall at Power Road and McKellips is excited to have bunnies for adoptions. We've received a warm reception from both the staff and the customers.

With the summer slow-down in adoptions and the continued influx of abandoned bunnies, we desperately need to "punch some more holes in our bucket".

Now, Angel goes to the Hampton store and I go to the McKellips store. Yes, it's true - with no help! If it weren't for the help of the mother/daughter teams of Kim & Kendra and Theryn & Debra doing feed and hay at the Bunny Barn, our weekends would probably be without sleep!

Please consider volunteering, if you're at all able.

We get occassional, erratic help during the week but we need some scheduled help that we can count on. We need folks that will help even after the "new wears off". Janelle and Kathy are the only volunteers that have stayed with it - one day each week - since they started, months ago.

Please think about it - we need your help.

In the same breath -- if you're out of our immediate area and volunteering is not possible, please remember us with your donations. We never thank those enough that do help in this very important way, so we'd like to do so again, right here.

Please consider helping the bunnies - in whatever way you can.

The Unfortunate ..
and Not So Few

We won't say that every one of the bunnies we've received has been "dumped", but there are times when we don't think anyone would blame us if we thought so.

Poor little Freedom came to us from a couple that "offered to keep it" when their friend moved away. He lasted a whole week there.

He was in one of those "wonderful" solid-bottom cages - you know, pretty colored bottom with no way for a bunny to get out of its own urine.

Well, his feet were literally sopping wet and the poor guy reaked of the mess he had been sitting in. He was a "trooper", though. He was scared, but he knew I was helping. He laid (shaking) quietly while I scrubbed and kneaded his fur. His tail was nothing but a brown wad of goo.

Chanuka and Diamond both have dental malocclusion that will require removing their "front six".

Anna Lisa is getting over her various wounds but appears to have been at least partially blinded. She'll be going in for a complete appraisal.

Cassidy will be going in for a workup and culture test for his recurring weeping eye.

I could go on but I'm out of space.
