EVBR Has Cats !!
Well, it has always been the case that East Valley Bunny Rescue, if we could, would come to the aid of any small animal that needed help. As most of you know, we’ve rescued virtually every species of “warm & fuzzy” that there is. But this is more than just an occasional rescue of something other than a bunny.
It’s true … You can adopt a cat from East Valley Bunny Rescue. However, we have not become a feline rescue — following the “complete” definition of “rescue”.We have arranged with the Apache Junction Animal Control (AJAC) to be an E-List outlet for their cats. That is, we take the cats that would have been euthanized simply due to lack of space and:
- Get them current on vaccinations
- Get them spayed or neutered
- Get them to a PetSmart adoption center
The city of Apache Junction (far east in the East Valley) is a little “off the beaten path”. Far fewer people will drive to the AJAC to view cats than will go to other places much closer.
Some rescues have been pointed out as “shoppers” at the pound. That is, they will go to an animal control facility and pick out the most “adoptable” dogs or cats and leave others to whatever fate awaits them. This is not the case with us. We literally do not know the age, sex, or breed of cat we are getting until we are handed the carriers after the 1-2 above … kinda like Christmas, but every week.
We have been blessed with great public response. Since October, when we began working this program, we have not had to refuse a cat for lack of space. We have had only a handfull of cats stay unadopted for more than a week to ten days.
If you are a cat person, as well, or know of someone that is .. spread the word! This was not a planned expansion and we certainly seek more support for this very worthy project. While, for obvious reasons, AJAC still euthanizes sick and feral cats, the “lion’s share” of the cats they would have previously put to sleep are now getting loving homes.
For all you “dyed in the wool” bunny lovers out there … be assured that this E-List program will not - in any way - diminish our capacity to care for those bunnies we continue to help. Our name is East Valley BUNNY Rescue and we’ll neither forget why we came to “the dance” nor will we ever stop dancing with the ones that brought us.
