General Information: Bunnies eat continuously! If a rabbit actually stops eating for 24-36 hours, it needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately. Water should always be fresh and plentiful. Just as we prefer bottled or filtered water, so do bunnies. Change "bowled" water daily. Do not put medications in the water -- the bunny may be "put off" by a color or taste change and dehydrate. Cecotropes: Another yet "little known fact" is that bunnies produce Cecotropes in their large intestine. Bunnies need a flat, solid spot somewhere in their cage (litter box will do - small flat board is ok) so their droppings will not get out of their reach. The Cecotropes are passed as droppings and are then eaten by the bunny. This "unusual" behavior is an instinctive act and is an aid to the bunny's digestive system. Studies have proven that bunnies on wire alone - without a board, etc - show a tendency to be less healthy than those that have access to their droppings. Studies are also coming to a concensus that hairballs are not really hairballs but rather a problem with the intestinal tract (G.I. Stasis) brought about by poor diet. Diet is so very important to a bunny's health -- please read and note these following recommendations. Specific Dietary Information: Rabbit Pellets Hay Greens, Veggies & Fruit Treats |
