Treats: It's a heartwarming thing to see a bunny come running to you. We go out into the bunny yard and call out .. "Yum-Yums" .. and every bunny in the yard comes running! Treats, obviously, can help you bring about this behavior. The problem is not only in knowing what's right for a treat, but in remembering that they're called "treats" for a reason -- they are not for food! Any treat should be given in small amounts (1-2 tablespoons per day) -- A very active bunny can be afforded a bit more. Treats -- Recommended: Dried fruits, as well as fresh, can be offered. We have a couple of fruit trees (peach) in our bunny yard and the "ground crew" (bunnies we allow to run loose) just love it when they come to bear -- they get to more of the fruit than we do! When you trim your trees, think of the bunny. Let the twigs/branches dry a day or two, though. Some tree branches are poisonous when fresh! Also, check with your vet about toxicity of certain flowers, but our bunnies absolutely adore getting a rose for a treat. If your bread is getting old (not moldy), again, think of the bunny. Leave the bread out to dry and get crisp. Bunnies love it!
Treats -- Avoid: Do NOT give a bunny anything that you would not eat! Mold (bread, etc) is lethal to a bunny. Stale fruits and veggies may have begun developing adversarial bacteria, etc. We mentioned dried bread as a treat. We repeat - TREAT! Too much of any grain, processed or not, is adverse to a bunny's general health due to the filling effect of the grains. The bunny simply cannot or will not eat anything else that is nutritional. Bunnies LOVE bananas, but bananas don't love bunnies. Bunnies can actually develop addictive behavior and become overweight from having banana as treats. We can't help giving a little on occasion - it's such a pleasure to see them enjoy something so much. BUT, that's only an "every once in a while" thing. If you're wondering if you're giving a bunny too much banana, you probably are. There's a bit of argument over whether or not tomatos are harmful to bunnies. We have allowed our bunnies (a couple of them were pets) to have tomatoes with no ill effects - ever. Our vets have put them on their "recommended" list, as well. The point here is, if you don't want a bunny to have a particular treat, simply don't offer it.
